Why are there free roaming chickens in Key West?

I recently visited Key West and I live in southwest Florida, but I don’t know the history behind the free roaming chickens in the city of Key West. It was actually way cool to see them tooling around. Especially the little babies!

I heard that they are protected by law to roam freely.
It is a really old tradition I find cool too!
