Is key west a good place for a married couple to live?

Teresa S asked:

I am a teacher, my husband makes a good living in car sales. We are in our mid twenties, live in upstate ny. We dont have any kids. I know key west is very expensive. Would we be able to afford a good lifestyle? Im not sure if there are many car dealerships in key west, or neighboring keys either.

I wouldn’t raise kids there. Too many alternative lifestyles.

I used to spend a lot of time in Key West, and most of the guys who lived there lived on other Keys and commuted to Key West to work. They had jobs working for the Navy research vessels.
If you are just trying to get to someplace warm, then the Florida panhandle is where most people go for affordable housing and to be near the water.

Key West is a bad place to go if you want to be a teacher. About 50 Monroe County School District teachers and administrators just got fired. Most teachers move down here and move back out within 3 months. But there are a lot of car dealerships. Some dude just got arrested for raping his step-daughter at a local dealership, so there may be an opening.* Sad but true*

I lived in the Key West area until 2003, until I was 26, I joined the military. Pretty much my whole life. It is incredibly hard to make a decent living there. I use to work 80 hours a week there. Housing is expensive there. However I have heard that you might be able to get onto Navy Housing because they have a surplus since you are a teacher. Good luck if you make the move. I spent my whole life in that area and I miss it very much. Its a special place. There are a couple large dealerships there and small ones all over the place. Don’t forget Miami is just up the road and a lot of people go there for major purchases.
