How do I get from Saint pete, FL to Key West driving?

It’s almost an 8 hour drive (just over 400 miles).
When I made the trip from Sarasota to Key West, I basically took I-75 south then switched over to 41 around Naples and took that east, then 997 south into Rt 1 the rest of the way.
