Tarpon Fishing in Key West
The tarpon fishing in Key West Harbour is internationally famous.
Apr to June are the prime months for tarpon fishing though there are frequently some dawdlers around at any time between mid-February and July. The tarpon is regarded one of the great saltwater game fishes, not only due to the size it can reach and its accessible haunts, but due to its fighting spirit when hooked ; it is terribly powerful, making impressive jumps into the air. The flesh is unattractive and bony and the fish is always released after a classic battle.Fighting a tarpon is both exhausting and enthralling. Those fish just have no idea when to give up. Routinely when you are fighting a fish and it comes and gasps a mouthful of air you know that you have won, when a tarpon grabs a mouthful of air it is able to take the oxygen from it and it carries on battling with renewed vigor. One of my fishing friends tells a tale about a first-timer who hooked his first tarpon. It is not bizarre for a tarpon to battle for an hour, and for the fish to be landed many miles from where it was originally hooked.
Add to this the chance of playing your fish under the watchful gawk of tons of holidaymakers on board a ship and you get something of the flavour of Key West Tarpon fishing.
