what is the author trying to get readers to understand in this section and how does she achive this?

gridironkid30 asked:

Her next city of choice was Portland, Maine. She chose this location because of its mainly Caucasian demographics she believed she could better blend in with other low-wage workers. In Maine, there are many weekly motels to choose from, and she finds one that is affordable and comfortable. While looking for jobs, Ehrenreich recalls that in Key West one job had not been enough to make ends meet and decides that two jobs in Maine will most likely be the best course of action. She finds two jobs that she is able to keep at the same time- working as a maid for a housekeeping service during the week, and as a dietary aide in a nursing home on the weekends.

The nursing home job, and she finds out, consists mainly of feeding the residents of the nursing home and cleaning up the food items. After a short time on the job Ehrenreich is entrusted with feeding the entire Alzheimer’s ward by herself. She surprised that with so little experience on the job she is given such a responsibility. Many of the patients are diabetic and the wrong desert could worsen their health. She remains nervous during this time but has pride in her work after her shift is completed.

But during that week, working for a housekeeping company gets more and more difficult for her, both physically and mentally. Ted, the boss, is strict with the women who work for him and keeps them to a rigid schedule that they must adhere to. The schedule makes it difficult for any of the women to have a lunch break, and a low wages means that most of them don’t have lunch to bring. They spend most of their lunch breaks and picking up a few items, such as potato chips, at a local convenience store and eating it in the car.

There are two housekeepers that Ehrenreich works with often- Marge and Holly. Marge is an older woman with arthritis, making it difficult for her to perform her housekeeping functions. Marge teaches Ehrenreich about the different pain medications that can help with the physical pain caused by performing the housekeeping duties. The job Ehrenreich finds the most difficult is vacuuming. The company has its own vacuum that is worn on the back like a backpack, causing back pain to anyone using it. Some of the older women are unable to vacuum because of the difficulty of it, and one woman is paid less because she is unable to use the vacuum cleaner.

Holly is a younger woman who has been with the company’s long enough to be the supervisor of Ehrenreich’s group. During the course of Ehrenreich’s month with the company, Holly finds out she is pregnant. The other women discover her condition because of her nausea and dizziness. She is vague when they ask her whether she is pregnant, not wanting to miss any work or to be treated differently. During one housekeeping session she twists her ankle and is unable to walk without pain. She refuses to see a doctor but instead wants to finish their day’s work. Ehrenreich calls for a work stoppage to protest Holly’s fear of missing work. But as no one else will join her in the stoppage, she eventually pitches in and cleans the house. After complaining to Ted, he gives Holly a day off to seek medical treatment. Upon leaving her housekeeping job, she reveals her true reason for having each job, and is not met with the surprise she had expected.

Good place to take my hubby on his 30th B-day?

Angie L- It’s a girl~1/24/09 asked:

Hi everyone- my hubby will be turning 30 in December and I want to take him on a little trip. We can do an extended weekend (for example- leave on a Thursday and stay through Sunday…) so we don’t have a ton of time. We live in Philadelphia. I have been saving for this trip for years, money isn’t too much of a problem but of course, I don’t want to go to a place where we break the bank. I just want to make this trip great since we are having our first baby in January and it will likely be our last trip alone for a long time. Any suggestions on where I can whisk him away to? The only thing I came up with was Key West. Any other ideas?
By the way, I will be about 7 1/2 months- 8 months pregnant on his B-day- so a short plane trip would be ideal.

Let go Run GMC (Gay-Mayo-Conley) and crush opponents like a Yukon?

dy_dy_dynomite asked:

I have said it before and I will say it again…CHRIS WALLACE IS A GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And for you Haters…Here is more proof!

This story is from hoopsworld!

Grizzlies in Position: The Memphis Grizzlies have gotten their fair share of flak for trading Pau Gasol to the Los Angeles Lakers and now Mike Miller to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The franchise is clearly restructuring and may not be the most attractive destination for a free agent looking to quickly win a championship.

Memphis has fully embraced the rebuilding process by establishing significant financial flexibility. Key to the deal bringing in O.J. Mayo from Minnesota was the contract status of Greg Buckner and Antoine Walker. Both have language in their deals that are very favorable for the Grizzlies. Buckner has a $1 million buy-out built into his contract after this year at the team’s discretion. In the case of Walker, none of his earnings are guaranteed after the coming season.

Together they represent a $13 million in expiring contracts at Memphis’ disposal (all but the $1 million for Buckner). That’s in addition to the $14.6 million they’ll have to spend (based on a $58 million estimated salary cap).

If they use discretion, next summer they could be over $25 million under the cap, although the pending signing of Marc Gasol would cut into that number. The Grizzlies have a number of trade assets in young guards Mike Conley, Kyle Lowry and Javaris Crittenton. The hope is that one of the three will emerge as a suitable backcourt partner to Mayo. When Memphis is ready to a make a deal, they’ll have their fair share of suitors.

Getting rid of the star players isn’t nearly as difficult when the franchise is losing and attendance dropping. On paper the Gasol deal may look one-sided but it was a necessary step in stripping the Grizzlies down to the core.

In the meantime they’ll lose a lot of games but the pieces are slowly taking form with Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, Darrell Arthur, Gasol, Lowry, Conley and Crittenton.

Over 20+ MILLION DOLLARS IN CAP SPACE NEXT SEASON! And for all you haters who still think An AllStar Caliber player won’t come to Memphis for that kind of dough is an
IDIOT! When it’s all said and done MEMPHIS will win that Pau Gasol trade hands down! In 3 seasons barring any injuries…The Grizzlies will be one of the top teams in the West! I can’t wait! Go Grizzlies!!!!!!!

cAN THE tRAIN sYSTEM. CONTINUE.to be so bad ?

Michealla asked:

IN WEST AUSTRALIA….PERTH ….PRecisely……Yes, Heath ledgers
old home town. We have just had in the Newspaper that the Southern
line ‘ Armadale ‘ is the most violent to passengers Transit Guards
(whom here by the way have the same rights of arrest as police )

Even if you don’t live here …do have a go… how can people continue
to go about their daily business, when people assault others for no
reason ? … i myself was followed by somebody ( in the middle of the
day ) … a very hot day ! there was no one on the minor road by the
station that day, everyone would have been in their homes or offices
by the air cons, i finished half a day at work…..went home not feeling
well ….i was very nearly assaulted … only i rushed to a persons house
nearby in time whom i knew….and was only saved by the fact i pretended to reach for my keys and that their was a car in the drive way… the person thought twice after having waited in a hidden area
of the Rail station … and rushing to get after me …decided then if
somebody was in the house it was not going to be worth it.
While i looked alone on the road … it was okay… i looked easy pickings.
Part of the problem, i wonder if the world knows that most of these
people here that get charged with assult are let go…. WE OFTEN
here of someone whom has a record of 200/300 offences ! i believe
now Australia to be ****** ! Thats , right , if this person was white
they would be facing the death penalty by now. I say justice for all
no matter race or colour ….Put them Behind Bars…..The first time !!!
People deserve a safer system, i have seen many assults on trains on
innocent passengers on this line and on the stations too.

Can you help with an outfit?

Candy S asked:

My boyfriend and I are going to a huge party in January. The theme of the party is dude looks like a lady. In other words , I have to dress him up. The couple that gets the guy to look the most like a girl gets a 2 night stay in Key West.

I think most are going to try the hooker look. I think we need something original. My ideas are:

1. A pageant dress
2. A big ball gown or quinceanera dress
3. A fun female costume or something (i.e. french maid)

I need ideas. What should he wear? How should I do his makeup? I think if I taught him how to walk in really tall heels, that would help.

The great thing is my boyfriend really wants to go and said he would do what ever it takes so I’m going to have him practice walking in heels each weekend until the party.

Oh, if you have a particular dress that you think would be perfect, please post a link. Thanks!

Arsenal 4-0 Newcastle conclusion reposted?

highburied asked:

Conclusion
Immeidate apologies for the crappy analysis tonight but in my defence the game was largely unremarkable and Arsenal were by and large comfortable. There’s not much to say, other than its another great result away from home and another away clean sheet.

Man Of The Match
Laurent Koscielny. The Frenchman was a rock in defence. I don’t think he lost a challenge against anyone, whether he was covering a defender or trying to win the ball. A really good return from injury and a performance that will get Wenger thinking.

Flop Of The Match
Carlos Vela disappointed me today. The guy doesn’t get many opportunites and he has to take them when they do come. He didn’t tonight, unfortunately.

Player Ratings
Wojceich Szczesny – 8. The long awaited Szczesny appearance did not disappoint. While he did not have to make key or overly important saves, he dealt with everything that came his way really well. Barring two incidents; the first where he mistimed his charge against Ranger, the second where he palmed Ryan Taylor’s free-kick in front of him. Fortunately no one was there to take advantage of that. One highlight was when he fisted a corner away at the end of the game.

Johan Djourou – 7. Yet again, he started slugglishly but grew into the game. Made a number of key interceptions in the second half. Struggled with Carrol and Ranger, however.

Laurent Koscielny – 9. My man of the match. Won absolutely everything that came his way and made a number of vital challenges and interceptions. He has certainly given something for Wenger to think about ahead of the West Ham game this weekend.

Emmanuel Eboue – 6. He did okay, but he did have some dodgey moments. He didn’t impress me too much going forward either, particularly when he had four Arsenal players to pass to but opted to shoot instead. That greatly irritated me.

Kieran Gibbs – N/A. Picked up another injury. Really hope this lad catches a break soon.

Craig Eastmond – 6. He’s a tidy player but he’s pretty slow across the ground and lacks strength. I think that got exploited up agaisnt Alan Smith tonight.

Denilson – 6. Faced the same problems as Eastmond, but did make a couple of really good passes.

Tomas Rosicky – 6. Did okay. Not outstanding, but not bad either.

Carlos Vela – 6. Disappointed on the wing. His crossing was pretty bad and he made little impact on the game.

Theo Walcott – 8. Bagged himself a brace with some typical good off the ball movement and neat finishing.

Nicklas Bendtner – 7. In and out of the game but his goal was a great finish. Two in two for Nicklas.

—————————————–

Bakary Sagna – 6. Relatively decent.

Cesc Fabregas – 7. I don’t think he needed to come on, but he set up a goal anyway so can’t complain too much.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas – N/A. Didn’t have enough to make an impact.
